HOW TO ACE A NURSING INTERVIEW

Congratulations! You're applying for nursing jobs (that means the end of school is near OR you're looking for a career switch)! If you've been so lucky to have gotten a phone or in person interview you're probably wondering what to expect. You may wonder... What questions will they ask? How do I answer them? What if I don't have any experience? What things should I mention and what things should I leave out? ...I will answer these common questions in this blog! First, to inform my readers I like to give some fun facts. I graduated from nursing school (BSN) July 2017, passed my boards (RN) October 2017, and got my first job October 2017. I did not have ANY nursing experience (besides clinical). I started applying to jobs in April 2016 and went on three face-to-face interviews. I was offered two out of three jobs during this time but turned down both of them. I then interviewed for the position I have now in September 2017 and got offered the job shortly after! Wha...

What's In My Clinical Bag?

Hi Nursing Friends-- I've seen so many people blog or post videos on YouTube about this so I thought I'd give it a go! I am only going to include things you really need. A lot of people have endorsements to sell products, so just keep that in mind when you are referring to other posts. I am a senior nursing student- so I've been through it all, I know exactly what you need! A sturdy bag. It doesn't have to be nice or have a lot of pockets. I use a free tote bag that I got from a resort in Mexico. It fits everything I need! A backpack will do you just fine.  Binders. Have a binder for each clinical in your bag, fill it with everything your class requires. BRING EXTRA PAPER! At least two black pens and one highlighter- because you'll need it. Chapstick- hospitals dry your lips out.  A clip board. I bought a White Coat Clipboard and I really like it because you can fold it and it fits into your pocket- worth the splurge.  Report sheets- print yourself many a...

Dear Freshman, There's Something You Should Know

So, you're going to college? Here's some things I wish someone told me:  1- Even if you say you won’t change your major, you still might 2- You don’t have to go out every weekend, or at all 3- High school did not matter one bit 4- Get a good nights sleep, exercise, and fuel your body with good foods- the freshman 15 is a myth!  5-Start applying for jobs early, you never know 6- Take every opportunity you get to do cool things 7-Adults don’t know everything, in fact we are all just faking it until we make it  8-Study hard because the future depends on you 9- Go to the library- you’ll never know studying until you lock yourself in a cubicle  10- When someone says: “Are you sure that’s what you want to do?” look them right in the eye and say “Yes, it’s all I think about” (and if you don’t answer that way, change your major) 11- People will doubt you, heck you'll even doubt yourself, and that doesn't mean you suck Thanks for readin...

Self Love & Doubting Yourself in Nursing School

Hi Friends- as I am getting deeper into the semester I seem to be doubting myself. Between a pile of assignments, intimidating professors, and being in my "last" semester I am feeling the anxieties take over. It seems like this semester I have way more assignments out side of class, way more things to do, and its been so hard to keep up with. I am constantly worrying if I will have everything done in time and if I forgot anything. My professor(s) this semester seem to be expecting A LOT out of us. Which, I can respect, but I feel as though I haven't learned the content which they are demanding yet. I am scared that my professor won't see me as the nurse I am trying to be because I am unconfident in my skills thus far. When I feel inferior to those around me I lose my voice. To be a good nurse, you have to have a confident voice. I am not sure why I am unconfident in my skills... I am still a student, but yet I am so close to graduating. I think the pressures of being ...

10 Valuable Things I've Learned in Nursing School

THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THEM ALL- Never lose your manners. It doesn't matter how busy you are, you always need to remember to have common courtesy towards your patients. Look them in the eye when talking, ask them non-medical small talk questions, and keep them in the loop if you have to quickly run off. Make your patients feel more comfortable and at least pretend to care about what's going on. Just be nice, people! You don't have to know everything as a student. You are learning and you are at the hospitals to learn. The licensed professionals are the people that need to know everything. For the mean time, the pressure is off but soak in every experience you can get. And this is not an excuse to not do your assignments-- you should know some stuff (obviously).  It's okay to tell your patients you don't know something, but don't leave them hanging. You're more than likely not a medical genius so it's okay! Just make sure you either look it up or fin...

Nursing School 101: OB/Maternity Newborn Rotation

Hi Friends!! It's been awhile since I last posted and I'm just dropping by to give you a little update on the latest in my nursing school. This summer I enrolled in Maternity and Newborn and Pediatrics rotations. I am finishing up the Maternity and Newborn (OB) rotation this upcoming week! Wish me luck on finals ðŸ¤“ So, some of you nursing students or people looking into nursing school may be wondering what all you will be doing in your OB rotation. I am here to give you insight on what you will more than likely be doing in clinical, what the tests are like in 300 level classes compared to 200, and what summer nursing classes are really like. First, I would just like to explain why I am taking summer courses. In 2014 I switched my major from dietetics to nursing. This set me back an entire year for graduation. UNLESS I took summer courses. So here I am completing my first summer session. I will be done in August. Each of my courses is four weeks. THIS IS EXTREMEL...

Nursing School 101: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Hey guys! This week I won’t be doing a product review. I am going to write about my experience with nursing school. I hope that this blog helps anyone who is going, looking, or dreaming about going through nursing school!   Before I started nursing school I was really curious about it and searched the internet for videos and blogs. I’ve noticed that a lot of nurses and nursing stories online (and in real life) are very negative. I found this to be really depressing and I questi oned if I did the right thing by switching my major. I decided that I was going to have a positive mindset and enjoy the process. I hope that this blog leaves you with a better understanding and a positive mindset before you head off to school!
